Accelerating Sustainability — ESG: How the Banking Industry Can Truly Make a Difference to the Communities

As institutional and retail investors in developed and emerging markets become more discerning, greater expectations are placed on the companies that constitute their investment portfolios, with many displaying a preference for top performers in the environmental, social and governance (ESG) sphere. Studies have shown that companies with high ESG ratings outperform their competitors during times of crisis, bringing a sharper focus on ESG in a post-COVID economy.

Likewise, financial institutions have been quick on the uptake. Recognising the growing role of ESG in maintaining strong organisational performance and sustainability, banks are increasingly integrating ESG elements into their decision-making processes. But as with all endeavours, there are bound to be risks and challenges involved – are these potential pitfalls being considered in detail?
