Following the success of our Southeast Asia regional showcase at the Ethical Finance Global 2021, AICB is delighted to co-organise the inaugural Ethical Finance ASEAN 2022 with the Global Ethical Finance Initiative (GEFI).

This virtual event on 29 June 2022 @ 10 am is complimentary, and presents you with a unique opportunity to hear from experts on sustainable and responsible finance in the ASEAN region and beyond.

ESG in a Volatile World: Profit, Purpose or Politics?

As well as looking at macroeconomic issues impacting global markets, we will have specific sessions on topics including:

Datuk Yvonne Chia is a senior Fellow Chartered Banker, Mentor and Transformational Leader. She has more than 40 years experience in the financial services industry, having held leading positions in both foreign and local institutions. She started her career in Bank of America and held various roles in Malaysia and Asia region . She was the former Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of RHB Bank Berhad from 1996 to 2002 and Hong Leong Bank Berhad from 2003 to 2013. She is a Council Member of the Asian Institute of Chartered Bankers, the Trustee for Teach For Malaysia Foundation and The Merdeka Awards Trust respectively, and an Honorary Professor of the University of Nottingham School of Economics.

Mr Eric Lim is the Chief Sustainability Officer at UOB. He leads a dedicated corporate sustainability office that is focused on achieving the Bank's sustainability objectives of helping businesses to advance responsibly, steering consumer wealth to sustainable investments and fostering social inclusiveness and environmental well-being.

Concurrently, Eric is also the Head of Group Finance, where he is responsible for the Bank’s core finance functions spanning financial strategy, capital management, regulatory and financial reporting, tax management, business finance and performance management.

Eric holds positions in other key UOB management committees, including Chairperson of the Group Sustainability Committee. He is also a member of the Asset and Liability Committee and the Management Committee, and holds directorships in UOB affiliated companies.

Prior to joining UOB, Eric was Managing Director and Head of Wholesale Banking Finance, Singapore and Southeast Asia for Standard Chartered Bank, responsible for driving the strategic partnership between the wholesale business and finance teams. During this time, Eric was responsible for the finance functions covering commercial banking, financial markets and investment banking.

Eric began his career with GE Capital where he took on various executive positions in the areas of financial planning and analysis, mergers and acquisitions, audit and controllership. He lived and worked in more than 20 countries, with particular focus in the USA and Japan during that time.Eric holds a Bachelor of Accountancy from the Nanyang Technological University and an Executive Master of Business Administration from the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University

Jean-Marc Champagne is the head of Bankable Nature Solutions for the Asia-Pacific region, which originates and develops scalable bankable projects with positive environmental and social impact. This includes overseeing project work in the region for the Dutch Fund for Climate and Development and leading finance and bankable projects for WWF’s global Freshwater Practice.

He co-established the Climate Impact Asia Fund, a long-only equity fund, and sits on its investment advisory committee. Jean-Marc also advises institutional investors, lenders, and underwriters on the financial and economic risks and opportunities related to climate change and environmental issues.

Prior to WWF, he spent 17 years in the financial industry advising institutional investors on equities and equity derivatives. He started his investment banking career in 1997 with Merrill Lynch in New York City and has been based in Hong Kong since 2004, working for BNP Paribas and Jefferies. He graduated from Clarkson University in Potsdam, New York.

Keith Lee is a Senior Analyst at CICERO Shades of Green, where he works on second party opinions for green and sustainability-linked bond issuances, as well as other sustainability assessments, research, and methodology development. He has over 10 years of experience in sustainability and finance across academia, NGO and private sector settings. Prior to joining CICERO Shades of Green, Keith co-led the Asia Sustainable Finance team at the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), where he conducted research and engaged with financial institutions and regulators in Asian markets, including Singapore, Malaysia, Japan and South Korea, to accelerate the uptake of sustainable finance best practice. He started his career in investment banking and holds a PhD in City and Regional Planning from the University of California, Berkeley. He also has a Master of Environmental Management from Yale University and a Bachelor of Economics from the University of Chicago

Rafe Haneef is the Chief Executive Officer, Group Transaction Banking and Group Chief Sustainability Officer at CIMB. In his capacity as Group Chief Sustainability Officer, Haneef has the responsibility for driving sustainability, which includes reducing environmental footprints and increasing ESG handprints across CIMB group’s own operations, financing products and services, and through CSR initiatives in education, economic empowerment, environment, health and community wellbeing.

Previously, as CEO of CIMB Islamic Bank Berhad, Haneef was in charge of the Group’s Islamic banking and finance franchise and was instrumental in the inclusion of CIMB Islamic in the Value-based Intermediation (VBI) Community of Practitioners, working to develop VBI together with Bank Negara Malaysia to contextualise and drive sustainability within Islamic finance institutions in Malaysia. He played a vital role in CIMB Group being a member of RFI as well as a founding member to the UNEP FI.

Haneef has a Master of Laws (LL.M) from Harvard Law School and a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) from International Islamic University Malaysia.

Raja Amir was appointed as Chief Executive Officer of HSBC Amanah in May 2021, and is responsible for executing the HSBC Group‘s strategy for Islamic banking in Malaysia, driving sustainable leadership and value-based intermediation efforts while spearheading the development of talent, particularly in relation to Islamic finance and sustainability within the Group.

Prior to his appointment, Raja Amir was the Head of Debt Capital Markets, Malaysia. He has made many material contributions to the development of the international and Malaysian Sukuk market, having originated, structured and executed multiple first to market landmark sukuk transactions across Asia for both corporates, financial institutions and the public sector.

He started his career in London in the tech industry, and moved to a local investment bank in 2006. Thereafter, he joined HSBC Amanah in 2010 and has since held various roles within the International Currency Business Unit and Debt Capital Markets team. Throughout his time with the Debt Capital Markets team, HSBC has been consistently awarded the Best Bond House (Global) by the Asset Triple A Country Awards.

In recent times, he led the Government of Malaysia‘s USB 800 mn Sustainability Sukuk, being the world‘s first ever Sustainability Sukuk by a Sovereign as well as the issuance of Yinson Holdings Berhad‘s MYR1.0 billion 5-year Sustainability-Linked Sukuk Wakalah, Malaysia‘s first ever Sustainability-Linked Sukuk.

Raja Amir is also in charge of delivering Project Cocoon, an initiative to transform HSBC Amanah into HSBC Group‘s first sustainable bank by the end of 2022. With his leadership, HSBC Amanah has been awarded the coveted Asset Triple A Islamic Finance Awards “Islamic ESG Bank of the Year” for the 2nd consecutive year and “Best Islamic Trade Finance Bank” for the 4th consecutive year.

Rashyid, 42, a Malaysian, was appointed Head, Group Sustainability on 1 Jan 2020. In this role, he focuses on efforts in implementing on-the-ground programs to promote responsible and ethical production throughout SDPB’s operations and global supply chain. He also engages with a wide range of stakeholders within the sustainable palm oil sphere.

He has 20 years’ experience in corporate and advisory roles around sustainability, corporate responsibility, corporate strategy, programme management and change management across the plantation, forestry, property, telecommunications, automotive, oil and gas and public sectors.

He was previously part of the regional leadership team for the Sustainability and Climate Change advisory team of the PwC South East Asia Consulting practice. He advised multiple clients regionally around issues such as implementing sustainable supply chains, development of corporate sustainability strategies, quantification of responsible practices for corporate valuation, government frameworks and policies, and corporate reporting and assurance around sustainability.

He joined the Sime Darby Group after 15 years of corporate advisory experience as Vice President, Group Sustainability and Quality Management at the head office of Sime Darby Berhad in 2014 and moved to Sime Darby Plantation Berhad as a Principal Sustainability Officer as part of the de-merger exercise in 2017.

He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Imperial College London, United Kingdom.

Rizal Il-Ehzan Fadil Azim is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Alliance Islamic Bank Berhad (AIS). He was appointed to his current role on 1 August 2017. Prior to his current role, he was the Deputy Chief Executive Officer and Senior Vice President, Strategy and Business Performance of AIS.

Rizal has over 27 years of experience in business advisory, banking and finance, including in Islamic Banking. Before joining AIS, he served at Hong Leong Islamic Bank, EONCAP Islamic Bank, The Boston Consulting Group, and Bank Negara Malaysia.

As CEO of AIS, he oversees the bank's mission to be the preferred ESG bank for business owners and communities. This entailed the rollout of AIS' flagship Halal in One program which assists SMEs to succeed in the Halal market by providing end-to-end Halal business support.

AIS also embarked on digitalising the mobilisation of social funds through SocioBiz, AIS' own social crowdfunding platform that helps to economically empower the underprivileged through business. SocioBiz has also been instrumental in assisting various social enterprises to attain funding for their business since 2019.

In addition to the above, Rizal is a key sustainability advocate for Alliance Bank Group and drives the Group's sustainability strategy framework and flagship initiatives. He holds a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree in accounting and financial analysis from the University of Warwick, UK.

Shahril Azuar Jimin was appointed as Maybank’s first Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO) on 1 March 2021

He leads Maybank Group’s effort on Sustainability which focuses on environmental, social and governance (ESG). As the CSO, Shahril will provide leadership to design, align and integrate our Sustainability initiatives, policies and goals to help drive the Sustainability agenda for the Maybank Group. Under Maybank Group’s M25 plan, Sustainability has been given a more prominent role and is one of the three strategic priorities of the Maybank Group. We aim to touch the lives of more people where we operate, by designing and delivering products and services that will drive real solutions. Maybank also endeavours to play a pivotal role in helping to realise the UN SDGs throughout the markets in which we are present to generate strong returns while enabling long-term benefits for our community and the environment.

Prior to his appointment as CSO, Shahril has held various leadership positions across Maybank Group including being the CEO of Maybank Foundation from 2014 to 2021. From 2012 - 2014 Shahril was the Chief Commercial Officer of Maybank Ageas Holdings Berhad which represents the insurance business of Maybank. Before that he was the Chief Sales Officer of Etiqa Insurance & Takaful from 2008 until 2012. Concurrently from 2010-2012, Shahril held the post of Chief Executive Officer of Etiqa Takaful Berhad, and was Chairman of the Global Takaful Group from 2012 – 2014.

Shahril has an LL.B (Hons) from Staffordshire University, and is a graduate of the Global Senior Management Program from the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business. Shahril has also completed University of Oxford’s Leading Sustainable Corporations Programme, and also University of Cambridge’s .Sustainable Finance Programme.

Pursuant to Maybank’s advocacy for greater ESG best practices in corporations, Shahril is a Council Member of the 30% Club Malaysia, which seeks to promote inclusive practices in diversity, equity and inclusion in organizations. Shahril has also been invited to speak on various industry conferences and platforms, including the recent JC3 (Joint Committee on Climate Change) Flagship Conference in 2021, an initiative by Bank Negara Malaysia and Securities Commission Malaysia.

Stella Cox, CBE, has worked within the Islamic financial marketplace for more than 30 years. Since 1998, she has been the Managing Director of DDCAP Group, which is a leading provider of capital market intermediary services and related technology solutions to Islamic financial market institutions.

Since 2015, Stella has been a member of the Board of Trustees of the RFI Foundation, which acts as a catalyst to link together responsible & Islamic finance, and she represents DDCAP within the Islamic Finance and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Taskforce, the inaugural meeting of which took place in July 2020, convened by the Islamic Finance Council UK (UKIFC) in partnership with the UK Government. Since 2014, Stella has been Chair of the Islamic Finance Market Advisory Group formed by TheCityUK and she represents DDCAP on the UK Islamic Fintech Panel.

In June 2016, Stella was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE). Stella was honoured for her services to the economy and, specifically, as a Champion for the Development of Islamic Finance in the UK. Stella was ranked number 1 among the "100 Most Influential Women in Islamic Finance" in the ISFIRE "WOMANi 2018" Report and was appointed Patron-in-Chief of WOMANi in April 2019. In July 2019, Stella became a Freeman of the City of London.

Suraya Sani is the Deputy Director of the Sustainability Unit at Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM). She is responsible for driving the climate change and environmental agenda in BNM. Prior to November 2021, she was the Head of the Financial Sector Administration Unit, which provides administrative and support services, including training- and performance-related services to the line departments. She has over 12 years of experience in financial sector supervision with BNM and has been instrumental in the development of BNM’s Climate Change and Principle-based Taxonomy as well as the ASEAN Taxonomy for Sustainable Finance. She is a member of the ASEAN Taxonomy Working Group I and II. Suraya holds a Master of Business Administration majoring in Finance from International Islamic University Malaysia and Bachelor of Business Administration majoring in International Finance from MARA International University.

Dr Theresa Mundita S Lim is the current Executive Director of the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB) where she leads the Centre in facilitating regional cooperation and coordination on biodiversity conservation for it to be sustainably managed and used, and equitably shared for the well-being of people. Some of her notable international roles in the conservation sector were as the Chair of the Convention on Biological Diversity Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (CBD-SBSTTA) from 2017 to 2018, Chair of the 15th and 18th Meetings of the ASEAN Working Group Meeting on Coastal and Marine Environment (AWGCME) in 2014 and 2017, Chairperson of the 4th ASEAN Experts Group (AEG) on the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (CITES) Meeting in 2006, and Chairperson of the 16th ASEAN Working Group on Nature Conservation and Biodiversity (AWGNCB), also in 2006. Her core competencies and extensive experience and expertise are in local, regional, and international governance, management, policy development, implementation, and innovation, partnership-building, science and policy linkages, and advocacy in the fields of biodiversity conservation and wildlife protection.

She moved to the UN Environment Programme’s (UNEP) Asia Pacific Office in 2018 to expand UNEP Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) activities in the region. She works towards the acceleration of the development of financial institutions that integrate sustainability as a value creation driver and which contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). She is a qualified UK chartered accountant (ACA) and previously worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers in London. She has a BSc from the London School of Economics and a MSc from the University of Oxford.
